Shanghai police suspect a Chinese tycoon who died on Christmas Day was poisoned.

The chairman and chief executive of games developer Yoozoo, best known for the strategy game Game of Thrones: Winter Is Coming, was Lin Qi, 39.

One of Mr. Lin’s colleagues – identified only by his surname Xu – was identified as the key suspect in the Shanghai police vstatement.

According to the Hurun China Rich List, Mr. Lin was estimated to have a net worth of around 6.8bn yuan (£960m).

On Friday, several workers and former employees gathered outside the Yoozoo office to mourn his passing.

The businessman was a star of the lucrative gaming industry in China and had made an incursion into film production as well.

In 2009, he created Yoozoo and led the business successfully through a time in which the gaming industry saw major changes to mobile gaming.

An emotional statement was also released by the firm on its official Weibo microblog.

“Goodbye youth,” he said, adding, “We will be together, continue to be kind, continue to believe in goodness, and continue the fight against all that is bad.”

Although the subject was viewed more than 290 million times on Weibo, the article received thousands of comments.

As Mr Lin was an ardent calligrapher, along with being a poetry lover, many of the tributes featured calligraphy.

Finding truth of his death

Details are scarce however, based on police accounts, Mr Lin is suspected to have been poisoned.

 

Yoozoo issued his own statement, stating that after feeling unwell, Mr Lin had admitted himself to hospital but was in a safe condition.

 

On Friday, when the company revealed its founder had died, things took a drastic turn.

 

The person in custody may be Xu Yao, who heads Yoozoo’s movie production arm, according to local media sources.

 

Some local media have speculated that Mr. Lin had been poisoned with aged pu’er tea, a fermented Chinese drink.

Yoozoo is also the co-publisher of Supercell’s smash-hit game Brawl Stars, along with China’s Tencent Holdings, in addition to its Game of Thrones game.

 

As it owns the rights for its film adaptation, the company is also known for its link with the Chinese sci-fi novel Three-Body Crisis.

 

But its extension into the business of motion pictures was not as good as the business had hoped.

It granted Netflix, the US streaming network, the right to adapt the sci-fi novel for television in September.

 

The book is the first instalment of writer Liu Cixin’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy and has earned critical acclaim, counting among its fans both former US President Barack Obama and Facebook leader Mark Zuckerberg.
